THE VERNON GROVE THAT IS LOCATED IN RATHGAR
In a previous post I said “If anyone had asked me where Vernon Grove is I would have said Clontarf as Vernon Avenue is in Clontarf”.
Today it was brought to my attention that there is A Vernon Grove in Clontarf and a Vernon Grove in Rathfarnham. I was also advised not to forget Vernon Street in Portobello.
John Vernon (c. 1618 – March 13, 1670) was Quartermaster-General of Oliver Cromwell’s army and third son of Sir Edward Vernon, of Houndshill, Staffordshire, England. John obtained title to Clontarf Castle near Dublin in 1649 through a financial arrangement with John Blackwall who had been granted the estate by Oliver Cromwell. Thereafter the Vernons occupied the castle for approximately 300 years.
