ZION CHURCH AND SCHOOL

March 17, 2022 by Infomatique

ZION CHURCH AND SCHOOL

The architect was Joseph Welland and Son.

A War Memorial Zion, inside the Zion Church, commemorates the members of the parish who were killed or missing in the Great War (World War I).

Joseph Welland (6 May 1798 – 6 March 1860) was born in Middleton, County Cork and became an Irish Architect for the Board of First Fruits and later the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. He was as a student to John Bowden and became his assistant and is noted to have designed many churches and schools around Ireland.

While working with John Bowden with the Board of First Fruits, he shared some of Bowden’s works. These include St. Philip and St. James Church, Booterstown and St. Stephen’s Church, Mount Street (The Pepper Canister), both of which Joseph Welland had to complete himself after Bowden’s death in 1821.

Joseph Welland died on 6 March 1860 and was buried in St George’s churchyard, Dublin.

His younger son William Joseph Welland (1832-1895) also designed churches, and worked for the Ecclesiastical Commissioners.

The High School is a 12–18 mixed, Church of Ireland, Independent secondary school in Rathgar, Dublin, Ireland. It was established in 1870 at Harcourt Street before moving to Rathgar in 1971 and amalgamated with The Diocesan School for Girls in 1974, becoming co-educational.

In 2009, it was ranked as the best-performing school in Ireland in terms of progression to third-level education and is part of the Erasmus Smith Trust.

THE DODDER WALK FROM ORWELL ROAD TO RATHFARNHAM ROAD

March 16, 2022 by Infomatique

THE DODDER WALK FROM ORWELL ROAD TO RATHFARNHAM ROAD

The River Dodder is one of the three main rivers in Dublin, Ireland, the others being the Liffey, of which the Dodder is the largest tributary, and the Tolka. Today I walked along the river bank from Orwell Road to Rathfarnham but that was after I explored Orwell Road. I uesd my new Voigtlander 65mm lens and I really like even though it is a manual lens.

For those of you are unaware the Russian embassy is on Orwell Road and there was a proposal to rename the road to Independent Ukraine Road but that is not going to happen as Orwell Road residents described a proposal to change the name of the road to Independent Ukraine Road as “kind of Orwellian” as they had not been consulted in advance.

FAKE VINTAGE VIEWS OF CHRIST CHURCH

VIEWS OF CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL – FAKE VINTAGE POSTCARDS

For most of their common history, both Christ Church and St Patrick’s held the status of cathedral for the Dublin diocese, a rare arrangement which only ended following the move to disestablish the Church of Ireland

The cathedral was founded in the early 11th century under the Viking king Sitric Silkenbeard. It was rebuilt in stone in the late 12th century under the Norman potentate Strongbow, and considerably enlarged in the early 13th century, using Somerset stones and craftsmen. A partial collapse in the 16th century left it in poor shape and the building was extensively renovated and rebuilt in the late 19th century, giving it the form it has today, including the tower, flying buttresses, and distinctive covered footbridge.

THE HORSEBOY MURAL ON STIRRUP LANE

January 20, 2022 by Infomatique

THE HORSEBOY MURAL ON STIRRUP LANE DUBLIN 7 IS NOW CLOSED TO THROUGH-TRAFFIC

I have noticed this mural a number of times but what I never noticed was that the street is closed to through-traffic. I checked online and here is the description that I found: “The street “Stirrup Lane” is located in the southeast of Dublin 7. It is about 72 meters long and the maximum speed here is at 30 km/h.” I checked some photographs from February 2019 and they were no planters blocking through-traffic.

Back is August 2019 An Bord Pleanála was set to rule on the case of a well-known mural in the Smithfield area after Dublin City Council found that it needs planning permission to remain in place. At the time a petition gained over 2,500 signatures in two days but despite this the appeal to An Bord Pleanála was withdrawn and an enforcement order was issued by the council. It is now January 2022 and the mural is still on view.

Stirrup Lane is a very old side street off Church Street. It was “probably named after a family who resided in this area” according to Paul Clerkin’s book Dublin Street Names but if I had to make a guess I would say that the name relates in some way to horses.

DUBLIN CASTLE WAS HANDED OVER TO THE IRISH FREE STATE IN JANUARY 16 1922

DUBLIN CASTLE WAS HANDED OVER TO THE IRISH FREE STATE IN JANUARY 16 1922

Erected in the early thirteenth century on the site of a Viking settlement, Dublin Castle served for centuries as the headquarters of English, and later British, administration in Ireland. In 1922, following Ireland’s independence, Dublin Castle was handed over to the new Irish government. It is now a major government complex and a key tourist attraction.

The 100th year celebration, 16 January 2022, of the handing over of Dublin Castle by the British to the Free State was a very low key event but I decided that it might be a good idea to visit and photograph the memorial plaques.

Most of the current construction dates from the 18th century, though a castle has stood on the site since the days of King John, the first Lord of Ireland. The Castle served as the seat of English, then later British, government of Ireland under the Lordship of Ireland (1171–1541), the Kingdom of Ireland (1541–1800), and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (1800–1922).

After the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in December 1921, the complex was ceremonially handed over to the newly formed Provisional Government led by Michael Collins.[1] It now hosts the inauguration of each President of Ireland and various State receptions.

The castle was built by the dark pool (“Dubh Linn”) which gave Dublin its name. This pool lies on the lower course of the River Poddle before its confluence with the River Liffey; when the castle was built, the Liffey was much wider, and the castle was effectively defended by both rivers. The Poddle today runs under the complex.
