The scene is very compressed as I used a crop-sensor camera and a 70-200mm lens.
Back in the early 1900s Dublin´s slums were the worst in the United Kingdom and many of the tenements were off Chancery Street. Fortunately, things have changed since then.
Today I used a 12 year old Sony camcorder, the VG10E, combined with a Sony GM 70-200mm lens hoping the capture what the streets feel like on a typical Sunday at about lunch time. Most of the restaurants were open or in the process of opening.
The street affords a vista all the way from the junction with Bolton Street south through Parliament Street to Dublin’s City Hall. Capel Street is notable for the remains of some “Dutch Billy” houses dating from the 18th century.
Note: Dublin’s Dutch Billys were reputedly named after William of Orange, and their arrival in Dublin is generally attributed to an influx of French Huguenots after 1685 and to Dutch and Flemish Protestants fleeing persecution after 1690 (Craig 1980, 86-87). However, it is clear from a number of excavations in Dublin including Smithfield (Directed by Franc Myles) and Newmarket (Directed by William Frazer) that this Anglo-Dutch building style was prevalent since at least the 1660s. The distinctive features of these buildings was that the roof-ridge ran at right angles to the street with the front gables, in the most characteristic examples, being masked by quadrants sweeping up to very flat curved or triangular pediments.
In the 1950s the Dublin Cattle Market Stoneybatter (known locally as ‘Cowtown’), was the largest weekly livestock sale in Europe. Of the one million cattle, sheep and pigs exported ‘on the hoof’ annually from Dublin, almost all were bought at the market before being driven to boats moored along the North Wall. Fortunately those days are long gone and I say this because I actually remember the smell of the cattle.
Stoneybatter, historically known as Bohernaglogh , is a neighbourhood of Dublin, Ireland, on the Northside of the city between the River Liffey, the North Circular Road, Smithfield Market, and Grangegorman. It is in the Dublin 7 postal district. The name dates from at least 1603.
It is often referred to as Dublin’s “hipster quarter” and was in TimeOut magazine’s list of ’40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world’ in 2019. I must admit that I don’t really know what hipster quarter means within an Irish context.

AN INCIDENT ON BOLTON STREET – MAY HAVE BEEN A ROAD ACCIDENT
Today I was experimenting with an old Sony VG100E camcorder and on my arrival back in Bolton Street I noticed a number of Fire Engines. As I have a policy of not photographing accidents if there are still victims to be seen I avoided getting close enough to determine the exact circumstances.
I used a Sony GM 24-70mm Lens but I forgot that because of the crop factor the lens is effectively a 36-105mm. I also forgot that there is no RAW option which was an annoying decision by Sony.
The Sony Handycam NEX-VG10 (model variants NEX-VG10E, NEX-VG10A, NEX-VG10J) was the large sensor interchangeable-lens video camera made and distributed by Sony in 2010-2011. It uses Sony E-mount camera lenses that were first used on the Sony NEX-3 and Sony NEX-5.
It is capable of shooting in 1920×1080 full high definition using a large APS-C sensor. The video is captured in the AVCHD format. When capturing still photos the NEX-VG10 is capable of 14-megapixel stills.
The camera kit came with an 18–200 mm lens that was also be compatible with the NEX Mirrorless interchangeable lens camera systems. The 16 mm ultra wide and 18–55 mm lens E-mount lenses also work with full auto-focus support. The built-on microphone is made of four directional mics that record in two-way stereo with the ability to capture both front and back sounds. The mic handle also has support for a hot shoe to connect a supported flash gun and a cold shoe to add on extra accessories.
First shipments of the NEX-VG10 commenced in September 2010 and I received my cope later in the year. Its launch price was 1999 US dollars and it came in a kit with a Sony SAL-18200 lens with hood and a free download of Vegas Movie Studio. As far as I can remember I paid Euro 2,000 which was a good deal considering the price of 18-200mm lens which I sold only a year ago.
