I THOUGHT THAT I HAD MADE AN ERROR BY REFERRING TO IT AS CABRA PARK LANE IN THE PAST
It’s a small lane connecting Cabra Park and St. Peter’s Road and it is situated in Phibsborough which is frequently described as a vibrant neighbourhood on Dublin’s Northside.
Previously known as Cabra Park Lane. The recent name change to St. Peter’s Lane is a reference to the nearby St. Peter’s Church, a prominent landmark on the North Circular Road. As a matter of interest there another location for street art on the Southside named Peters Place near Charlemont Tram Stop.
Was An Urban Art Hub
St. Peter’s Lane had gained a reputation as an open-air canvas for street artists and one could expect find vibrant murals, stencils, and other forms of street art adorning its walls, making it an interesting spot for photography enthusiasts. Back before the Covid-19 lockdowns the artwork was ever-changing, so you might find something new on every visit!
Ambiance
The combination of street art and older surrounding architecture once gave the lane a unique and somewhat bohemian atmosphere and as it was much less known than other similar locations it offered a more “local” experience.
How to Find It
If you’re exploring Phibsborough, St. Peter’s Lane is easy to find off St. Peter’s Road or along Cabra Park. Online maps will guide you precisely, and websites like Excellent Street Images (my site) feature extensive photography of the lane’s artwork.
Additional Notes
According to a not so current tourist guide “due to its growing popularity as an artistic spot, expect to encounter other people appreciating or photographing the artwork. However, Like any urban environment, be mindful of your surroundings”.
Today there were three elderly women who appeared lost and somewhat horrified by the condition of the complex of lanes and I was the only photographer.
The Great Western Square area is located just south of St. Peter’s Church and school on the North Circular Road. It is bounded by Great Western Avenue to the north, Broadstone Bus depot to the south, the railway line to the west and Avondale Road to the east. The area includes Great Western Square and Great Western Villas.
Phibsborough developed from the second half of the 18th century on the main road north to Finglas and Glasnevin. The name derives from a Mr. Edward Phipps who bought property in the area during this period. The urban core of Phibsborough dates largely from this time with some early buildings surviving at Monck Place.
Developments such as the layout of North Circular Road and the Royal Canal in the late 18th century followed by the Midlands and Great Western Railway in the 1840’s accelerated development the 1840’s. The overall character of Phibsborough is defined by large areas of residential development mainly Victorian in date but also includes Georgian, Edwardian and modern buildings.
A number of houses from the first half of the 19th century survive, generally built of yellow-brown brick with parapet fronts and steps up to the ground floors. The consolidated development in the latter half of the 19th century left a fine stock of red-brick terraces associated with the Victorian period.
Great Western Square consists of three red-brick terraces of uniform design arranged around a green. Great Western Villas runs parallel to the southern side of Great Western Square. The houses were built in 1884 adjacent to the Broadstone Railway Line for the employees of the railway.
I first came across this park in 2011 when I got off the Luas tram at the wrong stop – Cabra instead of Phibsborough.
The main entrance to Mount Bernard Park is located at Liam Whelan Bridge, Connaught Street with another entrance at Shandon Park. The park was purchased by Dublin City Council in 1983 from the Dominican Nuns and it extends 1.8468 hectares.
Lands located north of Mount Bernard Park in Phibsborough will soon be developed to become an extension of the park, Dublin City Council has confirmed. The site, which was originally earmarked by the National Transport Authority for the Luas Cross City initiative, was acquired by the local authority after the NTA declared that the land was no longer needed for Luas operations. Under the Phibsborough Local Environmental Improvements Plan (LEIP) the council sought to extend Mount Bernard Park to these lands.
Barcelona have a motto in ‘Mes Que Un Club’ that means far more than just the words “more than a club”.
Futbol Club Barcelona, commonly referred to as Barcelona and colloquially known as Barça, is a professional football club based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, that competes in La Liga, the top flight of Spanish football.
Founded in 1899 by a group of Swiss, Catalan, German, and English footballers led by Joan Gamper, the club has become a symbol of Catalan culture and Catalanism, hence the motto “Més que un club” (“More than a club”). Unlike many other football clubs, the supporters own and operate Barcelona. It is the fourth-most valuable sports team in the world, worth $4.76 billion, and the world’s fourth richest football club in terms of revenue, with an annual turnover of €582.1 million. The official Barcelona anthem is the “Cant del Barça”, written by Jaume Picas and Josep Maria Espinàs. Barcelona traditionally play in dark shades of blue and garnet stripes, hence nicknamed Blaugrana.
Today I used a Sony FX30 and an EF mount Sigma 24-105mm lens with a metabones adapter and to be honest I was very disappointed with the performance of the combination mainly because it very difficult to focus.
Broadstone is one of the three neighbourhoods that make up present-day Phibsboro in Dublin, Ireland. The most southerly of these, it begins just two kilometres north of Father Mathew Bridge at Ormond Quay. The area is triangular, bounded by Phibsborough Road and Constitution Hill to the West, North Circular Road to the north, and Dorset Street and Bolton Street to the south-east. The postal district for the area is Dublin 7.
Built in 1968, Constitution Hill Flats consists of three five-storey blocks, containing 89 homes in total. The site is located along Constitution Hill, with the recently opened Broadstone Plaza to the north, Catherine Lane North at the southern end, and a Dublin Bus Depot to the west with the Grangegorman TU Dublin campus beyond. The complex also sits in a setting flanked by historic buildings: the Kings Inns and Broadstone Station.
