Limerick Main Drainage Percent for Art Scheme

THE DOCKERS MONUMENT – SPOKANE WALK IN LIMERICK

I first photographed in May 2011 which is now more than ten years ago and the time I was using a Sony NEX-5 camera with kit lens.

This sculpture was commissioned by Limerick City Council and funded by The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government under The Limerick Main Drainage Percent for Art Scheme.

Limerick born artist Michael Duhan was selected to make a permanent tribute to the Limerick Dockers, as his father was a docker and worked on ships. The dockers performed one of the most difficult and challenging ways to earn a living in the City. This life size bronze sculpture reflects with honesty and integrity the physical work and the camaraderie that existed between the Dockers

According to Google Maps this can be found at Howley’s Quay in Limerick but according to the City Council it is “Located on Spokane Walk, opposite Bishop’s Quay”. My understanding is that the small stretch of waterfront outside Clohessys Pub [now closed] is called the Spokane walk, in honour of Limerick’s sister city in the US.

Note: Late in 2014 Rugby legend Peter Clohessy announced that his bar on Limerick’s Howley’s Quay is to close.
