THE BELFAST BUOYS AT THEIR ORIGINAL LOCATION – PHOTOGRAPHED MAY 2015
If you are American you may not know that in Ireland and Britain “Buoy” is pronounced the same as “Boy”.
When I visited in March 2019 I could not find these Buoys and it was only this month [November 2020] that I discovered that they had been relocated.
Last year the Belfast Buoys were relocated to the Titanic Quarter in Belfast.
They buoys were originally presented to Belfast City Council by the Commissioners of Irish Lights in 1983 and and were located in the Cathedral Gardens, which became affectionately known as ‘Buoy Park’.
Regeneration of the area around the Ulster University and the development of Titanic Quarter prompted plans for the buoys to find a new home near Abercorn Basin. In January 2019, the buoys were transported to the Irish Lights Headquarters in DunLaoghaire [Dublin] for restoration. They returned to Belfast took up their new residence in Abercorn Basin just in time for Tall Ships arrived for the Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival.
