PUBLIC PARK AT THE CABRA TRAM STOP

I originally thought that this was Mt [Mount] Ben Ard Park because that is what is on one of the gates.

Even though I live close by I did no know of this park until I came across it by accident in 2011. Dublin is full of well maintained parks and most of them could be described as “attractive” but this park is not one of them but it does have one excellent attraction and that is the free tennis courts.

The main entrance to Mount Bernard Park is located at Liam Whelan Bridge, Connaught Street with another entrance at Shandon Park. The park was purchased by Dublin City Council in 1983 from the Dominican Nuns and it extends 1.8468 hectares.

A PUB THAT IS NO LONGER IN BUSINESS – MATTS CABRA HOUSE

This derelict pub is located across the road from St Finbar’s primary school and GAA club.

The pub is now best as being the place where Eamon ‘The Don’ Dunne was fatally wounded in April 2010.

I have noticed in old photographs of the building and advertisements that it is spelled ‘Faussagh’ but elswhere it is ‘Fassaugh’ … are there two different spellings?

This pub was also known as Matt Whelans and I also believe that it may have been known as the Fassaugh House Pub when the gangland killing took place in April 2010.

MARIAN STATUE – MARY QUEEN OF LOURDES ON FAUSSAGH ROAD ROUNDABOUT

Today I used a ten year old Sony NEX-7 camera combined with a Zeiss Batis 25mm lens. The Batis is a favourite of mine.

Other than the fact that this was erected in 1954 I cannot find much information about this statue. Back in 2013 the City Council had agreed to undertake some repair work as well as replacing the cross but I cannot find any documentation to indicate that such work has been completed. However, the installation is in good condition.

If you are not from Ireland you may be unaware of ‘Marian Statues’ and if you are younger than 35 or 40 you may also be unaware of them and even if you pass any of them on a daily basis you may not have given them much thought.

There are about 20 or 30 in Dublin alone and most of them are located on public land in what were working class areas back in the 1950s. One or two are located on private property with the statue at Broadstone Station being one example.

Most were financed and erected ahead of the Marian Year of 1954 when entire communities mobilised to have a statue in their area. If you were female and you were born in 1954 there is a very strong possibility that your name is Marian or some version of that name.

The majority are still well-kept and regularly maintained by a dedicated groups or dedicated individuals but at times it can be difficult to determine who actually maintains them.

MORE SHERGAN SCHOOL ZONE PENCIL BOLLARDS – CHRIST THE KING SCHOOLS IN CABRA

There appears to be three schools in a circle around Christ The King Church in Cabra. Offaly Road, Galmoy Road, Annaly Road and Bregia Road.

All the streets mentioned above now feature the recently introduced “school zones”, demarcated by colour circles and pencil-shaped bollards which have been designed to discourage traffic and stop parents dropping off at school gates. A secondary purpose is to prevent illegal parking in the vicinity of a school.

As a matter of interest the School Zone Pencil Bollards are provided by Shergan Traffic Solutions based in Mullingar Co Westmeath.

PAINT-A-BOX STREET ART IN CABRA

Cabra is located southwest of the Royal Canal, except for one small piece of land between canal and railway line, and northeast of the Phoenix Park, and runs southeast to northwest, from Phibsboro at Doyle’s Corner and around the sixth Royal Canal lock, and Grangegorman at Hanlon’s Corner, to Ashtown and Pelletstown; across the canal are the districts of first Glasnevin and then Finglas. The area is often divided into Cabra East and Cabra West, with a notional line of division being the railway line coming from the Phoenix Park Tunnel and going to Connolly Station.

The Bradogue River, a tributary of the Liffey, rises underground at the southern edge of the district.
