INTERESTING SHELTER IN THE PEOPLE’S FLOWER GARDENS IN PHOENIX PARK

I checked Google for information relating to this structure and was directed to my own blog only to discovered that I referred to a sheleter rather than a shelter,

This shelter is located in a distinct park near an area known as the Hollows which, in turn, is close to Dublin Zoo. In the past I have had problems photographing this structure as I prefer not to include people in my photographs … today not a person to be seen.

The gardens which comprise an area of 22 acres were laid out and enclosed in 1864. They provide an opportunity to demonstrate Victorian horticulture at its best. They also contain a large lake and children’s playground.

Instead of RAW my photographs today were HEIC which was more than a bit annoying but the quality was more than acceptable. HEICs save pictures using the High Efficiency Image Format. This file type became widely associated with Apple after they chose it as the default file for iPhones and iPads in 2017. HEIC files use the .HEIC extension.

WELLINGTON TESTIMONIAL ALSO KNOWN AS THE WELLINGTON MONUMENT IN PHOENIX PARK DUBLIN

The Wellington Testimonial was built to commemorate the victories of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. Wellington, the British politician and general, also known as the ‘Iron Duke’, was born in either counties Meath or Dublin. Originally planned to be located in Merrion Square, it was built in the Phoenix Park after opposition from the square’s residents.

The obelisk was designed by the architect Sir Robert Smirke and the foundation stone was laid in 1817. In 1820 it ran out of construction funds and therefore remained unfinished until 18 June 1861 when it was opened to the public. There were also plans for a statue of Wellesley on horseback but the shortage of funds ruled that out.

There are four bronze plaques cast from cannons captured at Waterloo – three of which have pictorial representations of his career while the fourth has an inscription. The plaques depict ‘Civil and Religious Liberty’ by John Hogan, ‘Waterloo’ by Thomas Farrell and the ‘Indian Wars’ by Joseph Robinson Kirk. The inscription reads:

Asia and Europe, saved by thee, proclaim
Invincible in war thy deathless name,
Now round thy brow the civic oak we twine
That every earthly glory may be thine.

The Victorian People’s Flower Gardens located close to the Parkgate Street entrance, comprise an area of 9 hectares (22 acres) and, were re-opened in 1864. These gardens were initially established in 1840 as the Promenade Grounds. They provide an opportunity to display Victorian horticulture at its best. Ornamental lakes, children’s playground, picnic area and Victorian bedding schemes are just some of the attractions. The opening hours are 8am till dusk. Closing times vary during the year.

The Victorian People’s Flower Gardens comprise of an area of twenty-two acres, which were laid out around 1840 and opened in 1864. They provide an opportunity to display Victorian horticulture at its best. A large ornamental lake, children’s playground, picnic areas and Victorian bedding schemes are just some of the attractions.

Phoenix Park was originally created as a Royal Hunting Park by Lord Ormonde in the 17th century. The boundary wall was constructed in order to contain the wild pheasants and deer. It was first opened to the public by Lord Chesterfield in 1745.
