BLACKSTAFF SQUARE IS A GOOD PLACE TO BEGIN
Blackstaff Square is the result of the redevelopment of what was a at one stage a bomb site and according to some locals that I met it was a well-known site for on-the-street drinking.
I first discovered this area when I stayed for a week in the Europa Hotel and a few things caught my attention. There was a nice public clock which has disappeared because of the construction of the Maldron Hotel. There was a lot of litter and rubbish in the area and this has improved somewhat over the years. There was the sculpture “Regeneration” by Anna Cheyne and it is still there but at times it can be difficult to see because of the trees and bushes. There was “Olio” restaurant which was renamed “Acton And Son” but now it is simple “Actons”. Today there is a modern red postbox and a bicycle docking station.
